Design Charrette
Since 2008, the Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism has organized a regular interdisciplinary design charrette. The charrettes typically draw 50 to 100 students for a weekend of intense, creative brainstorming and collaborative design. Cameron Sinclair (co-founder of Architecture for Humanity) orchestrated the first charrette to design health and educational facilities for selected locations across the globe. Recent projects include the 2017 charrette led by Snohetta, focusing on sites located along the 34th street corridor linking Drexel to the Powelton and Mantua neighborhoods. The 2019 charrette proposed closing selected Philadelphia blocks to automobile traffic and designing new landscape features, public art, street furniture and other interventions to create places for people to relax and enjoy the city in a different way.
